Octavia Butler
Octavia Butler (1947 - 2006) was an American writer and the first science fiction author to be awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. Her novels use both alien and Earth settings to explore domination / subordination dynamics, race, sex, and the power of community.
Her novelette Bloodchild follows a group of humans and their unusual relationship with an insectoid alien race. The story's protagonist is a human boy who has been chosen to incubate a juvenile insectoid with his own body while he beholds the potential horrors of what is to come. It is a bold and controversial depiction of male pregnancy which won the story many awards.
