FEMINISM WORLDWIDE

Fury & Protests over Pakistan's Rape Epidemic

Hundreds of people have turned out in protest of what is being called a rape epidemic in Pakistan after a woman was attacked and gang-raped in a public park. The victim, a 24-year old woman, was walking with a male friend at 8 p.m. when they were attacked by two armed men. The attackers told the woman she should not be in the park at that time of night. Protestors have gathered in the park to express outrage over police handling of the case and to demand the attackers be arrested. The case has also gained widespread social media attention.

Low-Income Women Targeted with Anti-Abortion Ads by Google

Studies have found low-income women living in some cities are twice as likely as wealthy women to see targeted advertisements for anti-abortion pregnancy centers when they search for abortion services. These advertisements, created by organizations that label themselves as healthcare consultants but explicitly discourage women from seeking abortion services, violate Google's ad policy for ads that states ads must not deceive users by excluding relevant information or providing misleading information. Google has failed to take action despite having knowledge of this issue.

XX HISTORY

Carmelita Torres - Leader of the Bath Riots

Carmelita Torres was a Mexican-born teenager who instigated and led the 1917 Bath Riots at the Mexican-American border.

Migratory workers, due to fears of typhus epidemic at the time, were forced to take de-lousing baths with a kerosene treatment and accept forced vaccinations in order to cross the border. The workers were forced to strip nude in front of border guards, who were reported to have taken photos of female workers and share them within their local community.

When border patrol attempted to force a trolley of women workers including 17 year-old Torres to the decontamination procedure, she refused. After being denied refund for her trolley fare or admission across the border, she roused the other women to protest. The crowd grew to several thousand, forcing local authorities to intervene.

How to Create a Web Comic

Comics, like most media, have long been a male-dominated artform. Women have suffered the indignity of misogynistic jokes and depictions, first from every male who can ink a half-passable comic, now from any male operate a mouse and MS Paint. And the internet has given them all a platform.

Now it's our turn. While there's been a surge in high-quality memes about radical feminism and even misandry, radfem comics are still (mostly) a retro memory from the 70s, 80s, and 90s. It's time to change that.

The best part? You don't have to be much of an artist to have a successful comic. Cyanide and Happiness and xkcd both use stick figures and blank backgrounds and have consistently been two of the most popular and recognizable webcomics for 20 years.
