More than half of teen girls reported feeling "persistently sad or hopeless", and 1 in 3 have seriously considered attempting suicide (double the rate reported in teenage boys). Rates of bullying and sexual violence experienced by teen girls has also surged. The increase in violence as well as negative mental health affects of social media are considered to be large contributing factors.

France's César Awards Bans Sexual Predators

The César Awards (France's annual film awards ceremony) has announced that anyone being investigated for sexual crimes will be banned from their 2023 ceremony. The decision follows widespread backlash after Roman Polanski, who was convicted of drugging and raping a 13-year old girl, was nominated for multiple awards and won Best Director in 2020.

Several prominent French actresses walked out of the 2019 ceremony in protest when Polanski was announced the winner including Adèle Haenel, who was a prominent voice of the #MeToo movement and came forward to share that she was sexually abused as a child by a different film director she worked with.

XX WRITERS

Zora Neale Hurston - Anthropologist, Author, Filmmaker

Zora Neale Hurston (1891 – 1960) was an American writer whose work focused on hoodoo and the early-1900s American South. She wrote over 50 short stories, essays, and plays including her most famous work, the novel Their Eyes Were Watching God.

She was a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance who worked to open doors for new African American artists, establishing a school of dramatic arts at the historically black Bethune-Cookman University. She traveled extensively for her historical and anthroplogical research into American history. She made the significant contribution of exposing the practice of "parmour rights" in north Florida lumber camps, where white men in power would claim black women as concubines, often forcing them to bear their children.

DIY CORNER

How to Do Sticker Activism

Sticker activism has long been part of grassroots social movements, used to raise awareness and help activists (anonymously) signal their existence in a community. A great way to engage in real world activism for both beginner and time-hardened feminists, it's a cheap and quick way to get your message out there.

Things to keep in mind when stickering:
  • Postage labels can be used as a cheap alternative to printed stickers
  • Watch out for traffic cameras, security cameras, and CCTV
  • It's safest to bring a friend to watch your back
  • It's most effective to focus on areas that will be seen primarily or exclusively by other women and girls
