XX WRITERS

Virginia Woolf - Novelist, Early Feminist

Virginia Woolf (1882 - 1941) was an English writer and one of the most prominent writers of the modernist era and was a pioneer of the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device. Her works have been a subject of study due to their insight into social issues such as class, witchcraft, shellshock, and war.

Her essay A Room of One's Own explores the social injustices and personal oppression women faced at the time using metaphors. It has been an influential work in feminist thinking and has cited as a key piece of literature for understanding oppression in general.

DIY CORNER

How To Argue

Anyone who has ever gone on social media knows what it's like to have an argument with a stranger drain their energy like a battery, and have facts about reality that seem obvious twisted until their brain feels like jelly. But debating the truth isn't supposed to be about winning or losing - it's supposed to be a search for facts. Learning about logical fallacies (common flaws in logic) can give you the power to keep arguments from going off the rails and keep them rooted where you want - in reality and logic.

FEATURED ESSAY

Letter to a Young Feminist #1

This essay is a call to all young women who believe in feminism to not give up the fight. Even if it seems hopeless at times, we're duty-bound to remember how far women have come, and what our foremothers before us bought with their hard work and sacrifice.

"This letter is your legacy: Without your conscious intervention, that legacy may again lie dormant for one hundred years. Or longer."

FEMINIST LITERATURE

From Housewife to Heretic

Sonia Johnson's first book describes her life as a traditional Mormon wife and her journey to question the patriarchal customs surrounding her (which eventually led to her excommunication from the church). From Heretic to Housewife exploded in popularity with women outside Mormonism, as many found themselves relating to her questioning of the many male-centric traditions of her religion.

Gluck

XX HISTORY

Mary Wollstonecraft - Founding Mother of Feminism

Mary Wollstonecraft (1757 - 1797) was a British philosopher, writer, and early women's rights advocate. Her writings are considered foundational for modern feminism. She worked successfully as a writer at a time when it was a rare profession for women, authoring many popular and controversial works.

She wrote extensively throughout her life on the status of women and the power of societal expectations on women's potential. Her essay A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, in which she advocates for the rational education of women at a time when many philosophers believed it was not necessary, is one of the earliest works of feminist philosophy.
